There is a ferry that operates at no charge to passengers or vehicles. It connects Dawson with the Top of the World Highway leading to West Dawson and Alaska. West Dawson has about 50 homes, off the grid. When the river begins to freeze, the ferry shuts down and people on the West Dawson side are isolated from the community until an ice bridge is built.
